Protection of water quality

The Water Frame Directive establishes that all surface, ground and coastal waters in the European Union will be restored to "good status" by the year 2015.

Protecting the seas

While the Water Frame Directive protects inland and coastal waters, the EU Marine Strategy Directive, which will be endorsed in the near future, aims at restoring all European seas to "good ecological status" by 2021. Based on this strategy, EU member states will promote the development of the economic potential of the seas in line with environmental considerations over future years.
