Problem: Provide water treatment for a city with 4 million inhabitants and protect a high-value ecological environment - the Saronic Gulf.
Solution: Construction of a primary and secondary waste-water treatment plant on the island of Psyttalia.
Description: The ancient island-prison of Psyttalia, one kilometre from Athens, has been totally used to house the waste-water treatment plant for the Greek capital. It provides primary and secondary treatment for 700,000 cubic metres of waste-water each day. It is self-sufficient concerning power thanks to a biogas system.
Achievements: Significant improvement in the quality of water, restoration of the environment, reduction of eutrophication, recovery of bathing areas.
