
The Water Frame Directive establishes that all surface, ground and coastal waters in the European Union will be restored to "good status" by the year 2015.
In order to monitor this objective, a measuring and criteria system is essential with a view to measuring restoration results throughout the entire European Union. Currently, the European network for the intercalibration of water quality operates 1,500 measuring points, of which 232 are coastal, 883 control rivers and 385 control lakes.
