The "water stress index" is calculated by dividing the total amount of water extracted by the total annual renewable resources in a given area. It indicates the pressure exercised by man on water resources. It is also an indicator of the urgency with which management measures should be introduced to maintain the supply and avoid conflicts between users and competing uses.
A stress level over 10% is considered moderate, between 20 and 40%, average and above 40%, high.
