- The challenge of agriculture - Protecting the seas
The EU has implemented a number of actions: it has created EMSA (European Maritime Safety Agency) to prevent maritime accidents, monitor infringements and effectively respond to possible spills; it monitors the quality of coastal waters in accordance with the Framework Directive; it has implemented specific programmes to protect important marine ecosystems; and it also intends, as part of a new objective included in its European Maritime Strategy, to protect the quality of water in the high seas.
